FROM AROUND THE ECD

Information for this page comes from a variety of sources from all over the country.  I post them here for all to read and keep up to date on what is happening around the ECD.   If you have a ministry among the Deaf in your Church or Diocese, I would like to take note and post information on that ministry here.

From Rev. Barbara Allen

Dear members and friends of St. Barnabas' and personal friends of Phoebe Tharp,

In your charity I ask your prayers for the repose of the soul of our long time member, servant and friend Phoebe Tharp. I ask your prayers also for peace and comfort for her sons, Robert and Bill Tharp and other family members.

Phoebe had been a member of St. Barnabas' for over fifty years. She chaired the Altar Guild for many of those years. She would have been at Valley View Nursing Center for the Deaf in PA one year the 25th of this month.

Plans are pending for a memorial service at St. Barnabas'. Information will be sent to you as soon as arrangements are finalized.

From the Book of Common Prayer which she loved:

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Phoebe Tharp. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming.? Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen

Blessings and prayers,
Barbara+

From The Rev. Dcn Bill Mosier

Quoted from The Living Church.
Here's and event that probably won't take place in your church; At St. John's Church of the Deaf in Birmingham, Ala, the Rev. Marianne Stephens was translating announcements in sign language one Sunday near the end of the service when her friend Vernon Kroll stood up. "He said I don't sign but I have a sign," Ms Stephens told the Birmingham News. Mr. Kroll then held up his sign. It read, "Will you marry me?" The priest said yes, and the couple is planning to be married during the Summer.

Congratulations Marianne!!

From the Rev'd Jay L. Croft

This article was lifted from the E-letter "Deaf Digest."  News of the Week:

Kathryn Lindsay, a Gallaudet graduate, missed a chance to have a plant named after her, in the manner Regina Hughes, many years ago, was similarly honored.   Kathryn, a wildlife biologist with the National Forest, found a new plant in Colorado something like Two-forked moonwort or Botryichium bifurcatum. Her employer did consider naming the plant Lindsay Moonwort, but instead, gave Kathryn a cash reward.

Kathryn, whom I baptized many years ago, is the daughter of Jim and Ginny Lindsay, long-time members at St. Barnabas' Church in the Diocese of Washington.  Congratulations, Kathy!
